Transportation officials discuss plans to improve I-35

Though the Trans Texas Corridor project has been killed, the need for major improvements to Interstate 35 is a continued concern among transportation officials, who are calling it the most important corridor in Texas, according to the Dallas News Transportation Blog ("TxDot: Trans Texas Corridor dead but I-35 still needs massive help"). Texas Transportation Commissioner Bill Meadows spoke on the importance of the corridor and the critical need to address its continued problems at a meeting in Fort Worth with the state's highway chiefs and local officials.

The article also reports that the I-35 advisory committee has established local panels of volunteers to study local needs along the corridor following TxDOT's recent decision to adopt a no-build alternative for the TTC-35. The committee hopes to present the results of those segment advisory committees' work to TxDOT by August, so they can evaluate how to move forward.

TxDOT staff recommended a project on Thursday, October 29, to create six lanes on I-35 for a 29.6 mile stretch between Salado and Hillsboro, according to an article in the Austin American Statesman ("TxDOT considers $1.1 billion for I-35 expansion "). The Proposition 12 borrowing that allows TxDOT to pay back its borrowings with general state revenues instead of gas taxes would nearly complete the $1.1 billion project. The Texas Transportation Commission will vote in November on how to divide up the $2 billion that the Legislature authorized them to borrow.
