Governor Perry Schedules Special Session for July 1: Transportation a Top Priority

Statement on Governor's Call for Special Session

The following statement can be attributed to Bill Noble, executive director of Texans for Safe Reliable Transportation:

"We applaud the Governor for calling a special session to reauthorize five agencies critical to the state's operation and to tackle the important issues like transportation funding that were nearly completed during the regular session.  We remain hopeful lawmakers will be able to find consensus as they work through these issues that are so vital to the prosperity and future of the state.

"In order to ensure the future of our state's transportation system, lawmakers must authorize transportation entities to issue voter-approved general obligation bonds and the use of the Texas Transportation Revolving Fund to lend financial support to much-needed transportation projects.

"It is also crucial that the state continue to allow the use of Comprehensive Development Agreements.  These agreements are partnerships between the public and private sector investors to fund our transportation system, thereby easing the burden of gridlock and traffic congestion on everyday Texans much sooner than traditional financing methods."
