High Speed Rail Coming to a Terminal Near You?

High speed rail has been slowly gaining speed in Texas and recently received national attention as President Obama announced $8 billion in stimulus funding to study, engineer and build high speed rail corridors throughout the country (plus another $13 billion possible this summer). If President Obama's plan for even more spending over the next five years for high speed rail succeeds, Texas might see two rail corridors built in our backyards that will connect with existing local rail transit in our large metropolitan areas, and eventually connect over 70 percent of Texas' population with a system nicknamed the Texas "T".

In just five days, Senate Transportation Committee Chairman John Carona has passed two bills that directs TxDOT to study high-speed rail feasibility and "coordinate with local entities" (SB 1382) and another that creates a high-speed rail corporation that could apply for and win some of the $8 billion in federal stimulus money (SB 1570).

Both measures will now move the the House for approval.
