Transportation Commission Approves $500 Million for Road and Bridge Maintenance

This morning the Texas Transportation Commission approved about $500 million from the federal stimulus funding to go towards rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and bridges across the state. In the world of roads, this isn't a lot of money, but will surely put a lot of people to work filling pot holes.

There is also a list of staff-recommended projects to be funded by the $1.2 billion the Commission will receive via economic stimulus funding. Calls from lawmakers to allow more time for public comment on the proposed projects caused the Commission to postpone their final decision until next week.

TSRT Executive Director Bill Noble commented on the approval of maintenance funds:

"The Commission's desire to direct $500 million to maintenance projects demonstrates good stewardship of our state's road system, taxpayer money and fiscal responsibility.

"We share the enthusiasm of many municipalities about receiving this money, but urge our lawmakers to continue to be mindful that this federal stimulus funding will not be the sole answer to Texas' infrastructure needs.

"We are pleased TxDOT is working with local regions to adopt a fair and efficient allocation process that creates jobs and benefits local economies."
