Texas-Style Leadership: Dallas Officers and Fire Fighters Pension Fund Invests in Texas

Big step

February 6, 2009 and February 10, 2009

The North Tarrant Express bid award highlights transformative leadership and vision on behalf of the state of Texas, our local community leaders and the private sector.

In addition to reducing traffic congestion in a key part of our state, this partnership includes the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System among its membership, making it the first pension system in Texas and the first in the country to become a direct equity investor in a major toll-road infrastructure project.

This 8,500-person organization represents active members, retirees, surviving spouses and dependents of the Dallas Police & Fire Pension System, and will be the third-largest equity partner in this project.

Dallas police officers and firefighters have not only chosen to join a leading private sector team and invest in their area’s road improvements, they now have a seat on the board for the life of the project.

Increasingly, providing safe and reliable transportation for all Texans will require new sources of revenue and new ways of thinking to provide much needed roadway solutions for our growing state.

We must focus on completing projects like the North Tarrant Express that will bring new partners and equity to the table while giving Texans the efficient modes of transportation they so greatly need.

This action by the Texas Department of Transportation, local officials and an impressive private sector team responsible for creating thousands of new jobs in Texas demonstrates a huge step in the right direction.

— Joe Krier, chairman, Texans for Safe Reliable Transportation, San Antonio
